January 6, 2016 at 11:52 am

International human rights groups yesterday condemned the execution of Sunni Muslim scholars in Bangladesh including the head of the Jamaat-e-Islami and former minister Motiur Rahman Nizam, Almesryoon.com reported yesterday.

A number of human rights organisation issued a statement saying: “The undersigned human rights NGOs express their condemnation of the execution of a group of Sunni Muslim scholars.”

The latest batch of executions comes just one month after the execution of senior leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, 67, and Salah Al-Din Chaudhry, 66.

According to the NGOs’ statement, these executions constitute “violations” of human rights and Bangladeshi authorities have to stop them and other human rights violations, noting that these executions aimed to dismantle opposition in the country.

The statement added that the international “silence” towards these executions pushes the Bangladeshi government to increase its violations and executions.

It called on the UN secretary-general and the UN Human Rights Council to condemn these executions.
