Sudan’s former President Abdel Rahman Suwar al-Dahab has said that he is willing to mediate between the Egyptian regime and the Muslim Brotherhood, if the two are willing to talk.

“There is no doubt that Egypt is the heart of the Arab nation, and what happens in it affects all the Arab countries, so we are troubled to see there is some sort of instability there, whatever it is,” Dahab said in remarks to Quds Press.

“We are confident that the Egyptian leadership is willing to do what it can to stabilise the situation in Egypt through serious national dialogue,” he added.

Dahab downplayed the effectiveness the Egyptian regime’s effort to “eradicate” the Muslim Brotherhood. He said: “Although the Muslim Brotherhood erred in dealing with certain issues, which forced the Egyptian leadership to take tough measures that led to disturbing results, but certainly eradicating the Muslim Brotherhood is not the most effective option.”

When asked if he would be willing to lead mediation efforts between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian regime, Dahab said: “If both sides are willing to talk, I am also willing to lead such efforts.”

He added: “A majority of Arab countries are currently preoccupied with their internal affairs which will put obstacles before mediation.”

Egypt marked the fifth anniversary of the Egyptian revolution on Monday, which toppled former President Hosni Mubarak.
