Poll: Israelis support return to peace talks

February 2, 2016 at 3:28 pm

The majority of Israelis support holding negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, a new poll revealed today.

Israel Democracy Institute and Tel Aviv University’s monthly Peace Index poll also showed that respondents were sceptical that talks would yield results to the decades-long conflict.

Some 61.8 per cent of those who responded said they were in favour of peace talks, while 32.8 per cent opposed them. Arab Israelis were more likely to support talks, with 59.6 per cent in favour.

Rising tensions in the Occupied Territories have led to dozens of deaths and hundreds of clashes.

Nearly 70 per cent of those polled said they would back a meeting being held between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Despite their support for talks, more than two-thirds of Israelis do not believe that negotiations will bring peace in the coming years.

Jewish Israelis were almost evenly split on whether or not Israel should annex the occupied West Bank, with 45.3 per cent supporting such a move and 44.8 per cent opposing it.

Some 600 Israeli adults took part in the poll on 26-28 January.
