Journalists detained during peaceful protest in West Bank

February 13, 2016 at 2:40 pm

Israeli forces detained two Palestinian journalists on Friday while they were covering the weekly, peaceful, anti-settlement demonstration in the West Bank city of Qalqilia, Quds Press has reported. The men were named as cameraman Ayman Al-Nobani from Wafa, and Mohamed Turabi from 24 FM radio.

The coordinator of the Popular Resistance in Qafr Qaddoum neighbourhood said that a large number of Israeli security personnel, accompanied by bulldozers, stormed into the area and attacked a peaceful demonstration. Murad Ishtiwi pointed out that the Israelis used gas canisters and sound bullets to disperse the protesters, causing a number of light casualities.

According to Ishtiwi, the Israelis prevented the two journalists from covering the dispersal of the demonstration. They were released when the protest ended.

Palestinian and international activists have been staging anti-settlement demonstrations in Qafr Qaddoum in Qalqilia for years. They are also calling for the Israelis to reopen the main road in the neighbourhood, which has been closed for 13 years.
