Israelis prefer Benjamin Netanyahu to be their prime minister despite the failure of his coalition, a recent poll published by Israeli newspaper Maariv has shown.

The poll, which was carried out one year after the Israeli elections, showed that Netanyahu still has the support of 47 per cent of Israelis compared to 36 per cent who would prefer former Minister of Finance Yair Lapid.

In addition, the poll showed that Netanyahu’s Likud party is down to 26 seats compared to its current 30, while Yesh Atid rose from 11 seats to 21.

Meanwhile, the poll showed the retreat of the Zionist Camp led by Issac Herzog from 24 to 15 seats.

The Joint List, which includes the Arab parties, lost one seat.

The poll showed that the Israeli right wing parties could attain a majority if new elections were held – 87 of the 120 seats available.
