Iraq drops corruption charges against parliament speaker

August 10, 2016 at 1:14 pm

The Iraqi judiciary yesterday dropped charges of financial corruption against Parliament Speaker Salim Al-Jubouri due to a lack of evidence.

A committee set up by the Supreme Judicial Council to investigate the allegations “has decided to drop the charges due to a lack of evidence,” council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrakdar said in a statement.

Remarking on the committee’s decision, a member of the Iraqi Syndicate of Lawyers, Tariq Harb, told the Anadolu Agency that the judicial committee has not explicitly acquitted Al-Jabouri of the charges. “If evidence of the charges against Al-Jabouri materialise later, the judicial authorities can reopen the case.”

Last week, Iraqi Defence Minister Khalid Al-Obeidi accused Al-Jubouri and several MPs of engaging in corruption and blackmail.

Al-Jubouri denied the accusations and filed a defamation lawsuit against Al- Obeidi.
