September 23, 2016 at 2:15 pm

The US is to give Morocco $3 million to help it reform its prisons under a deal signed between the two countries.

US Ambassador to Morocco Dwight Bush and Director of Prisons in Morocco, Mohamed Saleh Tamek, signed a bilateral cooperation agreement to support the reform of Moroccan prisons. The funds bring the total US backing to $7,136,000.

“[This agreement] allows the provision of safe prison space and preserves the rights and obligations of both staff and prisoners,” a statement released by the US embassy in Rabat said.

Some of the additional funding will be allocated to reintegrating prisoners into society after their release and will modernise prison infrastructure and the management of prisons.
