Egypt targets Morsi’s family

November 18, 2016 at 3:25 pm

Egyptian authorities have issued an arrest warrant for the sister of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, his family revealed yesterday.

No reason was given for the summons which was issued for Azza Mohammed Morsi.

Lawyer and official spokesperson for the president’s family, Osama Morsi, said in a telephone conversation with Arabi21 that some lawyers in the Hihya Court located in the Al-Sharqia governorate, north of Cairo, confirmed that the Supreme State Security Prosecution issued an order to arrest and summon his aunt without any explanation.

Osama added: “We are not concerned with the justifications or reasons behind this order, as such orders are prepared in advanced and the accusations as well. The coup-led government does not need justifications to issue such orders that they use, along with a number of illegal orders, to cover the government’s back.”

He also said that the president’s family is continuously harassed, just like all the other free individuals who reject the coup and support legitimacy in Egypt.

The security forces had stormed the home of Azza Morsi in the village of Al-Adwa on 16 August and destroyed its contents, without revealing the reasons for the raid or the accusations against the former president’s sister.

They also arrested Azza’s son, Belal Ahmed Mohammad, in October on charges of protesting to overthrow the government. In addition to this, last January, security forces raided the ousted president’s house in Al-Adwa and arrested his brother Saeed Morsi, his nephew, and three others before releasing them at a later time due to a lack of charges against them.

Osama Morsi also revealed that his younger brother, Abdullah, went to Torah Annex Prison yesterday. The security force handed him the president’s red execution uniform and Abdullah handed over the blue prison uniform for his father to wear after the Cassation Court overturned Morsi’s death sentence on Wednesday.

In addition to this, Osama stated that the authorities at the prison refused to allow his brother Abdullah to visit his father, noting that “the president’s family haven’t seen him in three years.”
