Palestinian schools in East Jerusalem strike

March 15, 2017 at 9:34 am

Palestinian schools in occupied East Jerusalem organised a general strike yesterday in protest against the Israeli municipality imposition of its policies on Arab schools in the city.

The head of the Union of Parent Committees of East Jerusalem Schools, Ziad Al-Shemali, said the strike comes to protest against the “Spring Break” which the Israeli municipality is trying to impose on high school students as well as the ongoing attempts to impose the Israeli curriculum on Arab schools.

Al-Shemali told Quds Press that 90 per cent of schools in occupied East Jerusalem have gone on strike to send a warning to the Jerusalem municipality that it should reverse its decisions.

He stressed that the Jerusalem schools intend to escalate the matter if the municipality did not respond to its demands by Sunday.

The Union of Parent Committees of East Jerusalem Schools announced on Monday that all Arab schools in occupied East Jerusalem would go on strike yesterday in protest of Israel’s Jerusalem municipality “coercing Palestinian schools to close during the Jewish Passover holiday”.
