Bahrain security forces yesterday arrested members of a terror cell that plotted to assassinate high profile political and social figures in the Gulf state, according to an announcement by the interior ministry.
In a statement the ministry also said that the terrorist group’s members are suspected of operating under the umbrella of convicted terrorists, Murtadha Majeed Al Sindi and Qassim Abdullah Ali, who are wanted escapees believed to now be settled in Iran.
Of the 14 people who have been arrested, 11 received training by both the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hezbollah in Iraq.
The remaining detainees were arrested in connection with a terrorist attack that struck a bus carrying Bahraini police personnel last month.
The group is also suspected of plotting to attack “senior officials”, the statement said but gave no further details.
It said weapons, locally-made explosives and communication equipment had been seized from the homes of the suspects.
