Jordan’s Foreign Minister has revealed the ongoing contacts with Egypt regarding the detention of Jordanian football supporters in Alexandria, Anadolu reported on Monday. Ayman Al-Safadi was speaking after Egypt arrested a number of Al-Faisaly FC supporters following the team’s 3-2 defeat by Tunisia’s Al-Tarajji in a game held in the Egyptian city.
“The ministry is following up the issue since the first minute through the ambassador,” wrote Al-Safadi on Twitter. “The intensified efforts being conducted with the Egyptian brothers about this issue will continue until the issue is resolved.”
According to a source in the Foreign Ministry in Amman, the Jordanian ambassador in Cairo, Ali Al-Ayid, is also involved in the matter. The ambassador apparently travelled to Alexandria to see what was happening and find out what is necessary to secure the release of the football fans. More than 200 Jordanians, including children, were arrested following their team’s defeat.
