The Saudi General Authority for Audiovisual Media launched an official account for Saudi cinema on Twitter yesterday.
The move comes ten days after the Ministry of Culture and Information announced that commercial cinemas will be allowed to operate in the Kingdom as of 2018 for the first time in more than 35 years.
The Twitter account called @alcinema_sa first tweet was a single word “Odna” which translates into “We are Back” in reference to the return of cinema to the Kingdom after a ban for more than three decades.
The accounts gained 42,000 followers in just three hours.
Although cinemas will be permitted, “the movies will be consistent with cultural and religious values”, the ministry of culture has said.
The ministry expects the film industry to contribute more than 90 billion riyals ($23.99 billion) to the economy by 2030.
