Palestine to head developing country’s bloc at UN

July 26, 2018 at 1:01 pm

Palestine is to take over the leadership of the biggest bloc of developing countries at the UN in 2019.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour said Palestine would take over leadership of  Group 77 from Egypt in January.

The bloc, which represents 80 per cent of the world’s population, has doubled in size since it was first established in 1964.

The move is set to anger both Israel and the US which have repeatedly called the UN out on what they refer to as the international body’s “anti-Israel bias” and threatened to cut funding to the organisation as a result.

The State of Palestine was upgraded to non-member observer state status in the United Nations by the General Assembly in 2012.
