UN peace envoy cancels Gaza visit over recent escalation

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, cancelled a planned visit to the Gaza Strip scheduled for yesterday as a result of Israel’s renewed air strikes on the besieged Strip.

The UN peace envoy said in a statement yesterday morning that he was “deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of violence between Gaza and Israel” warning that “if the current escalation however is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people”.

During his visit, , was scheduled to meet with a number of Hamas leaders to discuss a draft proposal for a long-term truce agreement with Israel.

The Israeli army said it has carried out more than 150 air strikes against Palestinian targets in Gaza since Wednesday.

The Israeli air strikes resulted in the death of a Palestinian baby girl, her pregnant mother and a young man.
