Jordanian security services have arrested a man who is thought to have killed the former head of counterterrorism unit, retired General Habis Al-Hanayneh, who was shot outside his home in the city of Madaba yesterday.

A spokesman of public security department said in a statement that the special investigative team formed from the public security department and general intelligence was able to identify the suspect and arrest him within hours of the murder.

The statement said the suspect confessed during investigation to his crime and that he had planned for some time to kill General Hanayned because he believed that he was behind his arrest while in Russia in 2005, and that he caused him trouble at his work.

Fifty-six-year-old Hanayneh was shot three times in the chest while outside his home in Madaba city. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Al-Nadim hospital.
