The Egyptian government has suspended work in all state institutions today following predictions of very bad weather, the state-run Al-Ahram has reported.
The suspension will not apply to workers in vital public services such as transport, hospitals and ambulances, the police and the water and sewage sector. Mills and bakeries will also be exempted from the shut-down.
The forecast from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) predicted “very heavy rain” for Cairo, the Nile Delta region, cities along the Mediterranean and other parts of the country on Thursday. Furthermore, strong winds are expected to whip up sandstorms across the country. The stormy weather is also predicted to hit several other countries in the region.
Earlier this week, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Authority warned that the “extremely unstable” weather will continue until Saturday. The CAA urged the authorities to take the necessary measures to limit any negative impact.
