Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that his country’s relations with Syria are witnessing “great development” as he noted the increase in trade between the two allies, Anadolu has reported.

Putin made his comments during a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, who arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening for an official visit. Both Russia Today and the Syrian regime’s news agency, SANA, provided details of his programme.

The Syrian people, said Putin, were unfortunate to be exposed to the catastrophe of the recent earthquake, which exacerbated their suffering. “We, as sincere friends, are doing everything in our power to alleviate this suffering,” he added.

“We thank Russia for the great assistance it provided in the wake of the earthquake,” said Assad. The Syrian president noted that his country is satisfied with the results of the work of the joint Syrian-Russian committee. His visit, he explained, will pave the way for a new phase in relations between the two countries in all fields.
