Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank held its 37th graduation ceremony at the weekend; the programme of events was spread over two days. Post-graduate students were honoured on Saturday, along with graduates in the faculties of engineering, science, law and public administration. On Sunday, it was the turn of the literature, business and education graduates.

Throughout the ceremonies, speakers emphasised the need to use education as a means to combat the Israeli occupation and its violations of human rights and international laws. The Chancellor of the university, Dr Muhammad al-Hindi, spoke about the many obstacles which prevented students from completing their studies. Foremost among these are the harsh economic conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories as well as the on-going harassment and detention of students and lecturers by the Israeli occupation authorities.
