Iraqi MPs vote to remove parliament speaker, call for early elections

April 15, 2016 at 3:58 pm

Iraqi politicians have voted to remove parliament speaker Salim al-Juburi, MPs say, a day after he adjourned a parliamentary session after fighting broke out over Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s efforts to replace the current cabinet.

Al-Juburi has said that the move was “unconstitutional and lacked the necessary quorum”.

However, according to Al-Jazeera, Niyazi Oghlu, the official responsible for taking roll at parliament, put the number of politicians present at 173 out of 328, while two MPs also said more than 170 attended.

On Thursday, dozens of Iraqi MPs who staged a sit-in in the Iraqi parliament called to dismiss President Fuad Masum, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Parliamentary Speaker Salim al-Juburi and hold early elections.

Haitham al-Jubouri, a spokesman for the protesting MPs, told reporters that the MPs want to hold early elections, change the Electoral Commission and make sure that the next government “balances components”.
