The Egyptian union of journalists on Monday launched an open-ended sit in and called for the dismissal of Interior Minister Majdi Abdul Ghaffar to protest against the storming of their headquarters by security forces and the arrest of two journalists.
Egyptian journalist Mohamed Abdul Quddus said in a telephone call to Anadolu news agency that the union has also called for an urgent meeting of general assembly members on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments.
The union said in a statement on Monday: “The journalistic community and the Egyptian people were surprised by the security forces blatant barbarism and aggression on the dignity of the press and journalists and their syndicate.”

The union said the aggression against the union headquarters is in violation of the law, the constitution and all political, national and international norms.
The journalists’ union has been leading protests against the Egyptian government’s decision to give two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia.
