A sudden rise in the price has pushed Egypt to produce an additional 37,000 tons of sugar to meet domestic demand. The price of sugar rose to 8 Egyptian pounds per kilo recently.
Minister of Trade and Industry Tarek Kabil said that his officials are seeking to provide 450,000 to 550,000 tons of sugar between now and the end of the season in February. He has taken charge of the Ministry of Supply following the resignation of Khaled Hanafi.
Consumers and traders complained to government institutions about the rising prices of sugar, prompting officials to take action.
