Egyptian military has announced the arrests of 674 illegal immigrants Cairo.

“The border guards in the Western Region military succeeded in controlling the 665 individual illegal immigration from different nationalities, in addition to [23] vehicles used in the smuggling operations,” army spokesman, Brigadier General Mohammad Samir, said.

The immigrants will be brought in front of “competent prosecutors to take legal action”. The military statement did not disclose the countries the immigrants planned to travel to but it is likely their destination was Europe.

Dozens of illegal immigrants died in September when their boat capsized on their way to Europe.

More than 150,000 migrants and refugees have been rescued from the Mediterranean Sea this year with around 3,750 dying whilst making the journey.
