Saudi authorities allow wife of detained Islamic scholar to visit him

The Prisoners of Conscience Twitter account said the Saudi authorities have allowed the wife of Sheikh Safar Al- Hawali to visit him in prison for few minutes.

According to the account; which reports on political prisoners in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi authorities have also allowed the wives of his imprisoned sons to visit their husbands.

Sheikh al-Hawali; who has been detained for several months is alive and his health is stable after periods of deterioration due to the conditions he suffers in his detention; the account said.

However, the account pointed out that the new information does not negate the danger to his life, explaining that the Saudi authorities are responsible for al- Hawali’s life and well being because “he is an old man and suffers from many diseases”.

Over one month ago; it was reported that al-Hawali may have died in prison; after his health has rapidly deteriorated.

The Saudi security forces arrested al-Hawali after the release of his book “Muslims and Western civilization” in which he criticized Saudi Arabia’s spending of billions of US dollars on the administration of US President Donald Trump.
