Sudan forces battle armed cell in Khartoum

Four people were wounded during clashes between the Sudanese security forces and militants yesterday in the south of the capital city of Khartoum.

Anadolu Agency quoted a Sudanese intelligence source as saying that the clashes erupted in the Jabra area between “local security forces and a terrorist cell.”

While the source did not provide details about the identity of the cell, the event comes a week after the Sudanese authorities arrested 11 international militants from a Daesh cell during clashes in Khartoum, which had left five intelligence officers dead.

The source added that the security forces had launched an operation “to search for cell members.”

The official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported that the military clashes had left four dead, adding that the security forces had arrested “another four fighters.” The reports came a day after local authorities said they had arrested ten Egyptians in Khartoum and Omdurman.

Such military operations are seen as the first since the overthrow of President Omar Al-Bashir. It also comes after the Sudanese army said on 21 September that it had thwarted a coup attempt by Al-Bashir supporters.

Since August 2018, Sudan has been experiencing a 53-month transitional period with power being shared between the army, civilian forces and armed movements. The transition is due to end with elections being held in early 2024.
