Jordan: Kerak city seeks to rename main street in honour of Ismail Haniyeh

A major street in the city of Kerak, southern Jordan, may soon be named Martyr Ismail Haniyeh Street. The road lies near Martyr Saddam Hussein Street.

The Kerak Municipality has decided to name a main road after Haniyeh, the political bureau chief of Hamas, after he was assassinated earlier this week. This decision may face opposition from the government as it signified ties with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

In the city of Salt, residents distributed coffee to visitors, tourists and passers-by in honour of Haniyeh.

While in the capital Amman, some political candidates set up tents to receive condolences following “the nation’s loss”. While the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Haniyeh hails, called on citizens to openly participate in celebrating Haniyeh.

The Jordanian government has yet to issue a statement offering condolences to the Palestinian people or Hamas for following Haniyeh’s assassination. The Foreign Ministry has, however, condemned the attempt on the “deceased’s life”.
