Cambridge Uni Camp: 'We won't leave until they divest'
MEMO was invited inside the tents at Cambridge University's Palestine camp, where students have been sleeping on the lawn outside King's College for over two weeks. While mainstream media outlets have been largely shunned by these students for their biased coverage, MEMO was shown the inner workings of the camp by Cambridge for Palestine, who intend to stay for months if they have to. The camp now has electricity for students to study, regular food donations, communal shelters, blankets and sleeping bags for all, as well as an emergency toilet. Mahmoud, a spokesperson for the movement in Cambridge, said the students have been 'united by the genocide' after they realised their university was complicit in death and destruction in Gaza through its investments in arms firms that supply Israel.

This is a new record, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC). The body’s global monitoring manager explains the driving forces behind internal displacement and discusses both wars and conflicts and the natural disasters forcing people away from their homes.

The Global Tribunal on Palestine is set to begin its work
Since the announcement in early March of the establishment of the Global Tribunal on Palestine (GTP) by five human rights NGOs based in Geneva, efforts have been underway to ensure the success of this event. Dozens of jurists, lawyers, judges, historians and philosophers are taking part. MEMO has been following this event closely since its inception. We reached out to the preparatory committee coordinator of the GTP, Dr Haytham Manna, to inquire about the progress of these efforts and to provide us with an update on the court’s formation, process — and anticipated outcomes — twenty days before the meeting scheduled for next month. MEMO: Since the beginning of the century, you have been involved in organising several “courts of […]

The New Experts: Populist Elites and Technocratic Promises in Modi’s India
In 2014, Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won India’s 16th general election and, among huge swathes of the country’s population as well as the international community, there was great concern about what a Modi India would look like. Aside from concerns over his role during the Gujarat riots in 2002, Modi’s platform was seen as illiberal, right-leaning populist, anti-establishment and anti-expert. Many wondered whether ideology would rule the day or competency and expertise would. The reality that unfolded was much more complex than what many expected at the time and Anuradha Sajjanhar’s The New Experts: Populist Elites and Technocratic Promises in Modi’s India argues that, while the experts and technocrats of the pre-2014 establishment were replaced and, despite […]
