Israeli government accused of giving green light for settler attacks on Palestinians

A senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) has said that the current ideological make-up of the Israeli government gives Israeli settlers the green light to attack Palestinians. Dr. Hanan Ashrawi likened the organised crimes to genocide, adding that the Israeli government has allowed the creation of a fully-armed settlers’ militia.

Dr. Ashrawi criticised the “shameful” silence of the international community about the unilateral violations by Israel and its illegal settlers against Palestinians and their rights. She warned that this could drag the entire region into an endless cycle of violence.

According to Ashrawi, Israelis’ actions and irresponsible official statements, as well as the absence of international accountability, have provided legal and political immunity for Israeli occupation forces to attack Palestinians on every level. She said that she holds Israel responsible for the killing of two Palestinian citizens in Hebron yesterday (Monday).

The veteran PLO Executive Committee member called on the world to take decisive and practical action to hold Israel accountable for its crimes. This should act as a deterrent to Israelis and bring an end to their “crimes against humanity”, she said.
