Qatar and Egypt agree on building materials going to Gaza for reconstruction projects

February 17, 2014 at 1:50 am

The Qatari Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza and the Egyptian Arab Contractors’ Company have signed a cooperation agreement for the Gaza reconstruction project funded by a Qatar government donation of $407 million.

Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Tarek Wafiq, said that the agreement puts into place the process to implement the decision by the Emir of Qatar to build roads, housing units, infrastructure and a hospital in the Gaza Strip as part of a major reconstruction project. The Emir made a historic visit to Gaza last October, during which he announced the financial support.

The agreement will see the Egyptians carrying out the tendering procedures and resourcing the necessary building materials and equipment. Mr. Wafiq noted that this will boost the Egyptian economy and create new job opportunities. His ministry is affiliated with the Arab Contractors’ Company, which will utilise Egyptian expertise in the construction industry for the Gaza project.

Construction materials started to enter Gaza through the Egypt-Palestine border crossing at Rafah two weeks ago.
