The killing and wounding of scores of football fans in Cairo last Sunday is a “crime against the Egyptian people”, Palestinian Al-Resalah newspaper reported the Muslim Brotherhood saying yesterday.
The group’s spokesman Mohamed Montasser commented on the incidents, which came following a football match between Al-Zamalek and Enbi teams as part of the Egyptian League, with a tweet that read: “This regime knows nothing except killing.”
He also tweeted: “The people revolted against the thugs of the interior [ministry] and it will continue this way until it gets rid of them.”
Meanwhile, the 6 April Movement said that these incidents came to cover up the recordings leaked from the office of Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, in which he declares that he despised some of the Gulf States.
Senior member of 6 April Movement Mohamed Mustafa told Al-Jazeera that his movement had expected something like this after the news about the latest “dangerous” leaks.
The head of Construction and Development party Mohamed Al-Zomar tweeted similar statements. He added that the killing of such a large number of Egyptians shows how the current regime sees the Egyptians’ blood as “very cheap”.
The Egyptian interior ministry announced that a number of Egyptians were killed in a stampede which occurred after an escalation of clashes between football fans and the Egyptian security services. Fans said the security services were violent and heavy handed.
