Ghannushi calls on Saudi to lead reconciliation in Egypt

Leader of the Tunisian Renaissance movement, Sheikh Rashid Al-Ghannushi, called on the Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz to lead a reconciliatory project in the region, in particular between the Muslim Brotherhood and the military in Egypt.

In a statement to Quds Press, Al-Ghannushi criticised the decision to refer the papers of Mohamed Morsi and 119 defendants to the Grand Mufti as a prelude to their execution, and the postponement of the sentencing of the remaining defendants to June.

The Tunisian leader saw this as a step that worsens the crisis and does not help Egypt’s stability, saying: “The least words that could describe this decision is being a wrong and unjust decision that does not help solve Egypt’s or the region’s problems, but rather further aggravates and complicates the situation, and takes Egypt to the unknown.”

He urged Egyptians to move towards reconciliation rather than taking the belligerent approach, saying, “our call is urgent to reverse this ruling and to take the reconciliation path, no party could exclude the other, and no one could imagine Egypt without the Muslim Brotherhood at that time, nor Egypt without a leading role for the army, and the only way is dialogue and reconciliation, and the search for consensus rather than monopolising power.”

Al-Ghannushi renewed his call for Saudi Arabia to lead a conciliatory role in the region, saying: “I called on the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, through his country’s location, being the main destination for Muslims from all over the world, and the prestigious status enjoyed by the Saudi Kingdom, to play a reconciliatory, historic role in the region, including in Egypt, and I am ready to help in this direction.”
