Turkey allocates $70 million to strengthen border security

August 31, 2015 at 11:40 am

Turkey’s finance minister has revealed that the government has allocated $70 million to the ministry of defence to strengthen border security. Speaking to Anadolu news agency, Mehmet Şimşek said that this covers the cost of a 134 kilometre-long wall on the border in the states of Htaa, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, and Mardin, as well as a barbed wire fence, the opening of some roads and additional security lighting.

The minister pointed out that, if necessary, Turkey will take even more measures to ensure the security of its borders, especially the frontier with Syria. Additional security has resulted in fewer illegal crossing of the Syria-Turkish border over the past 18 months. The new system will include round-the-clock surveillance.
