Egypt renews detention of Esraa El-Taweel for the 11th time

November 3, 2015 at 12:05 pm

An Egyptian court yesterday renewed the detention of Esraa El-Taweel for 45 days pending an investigation into accusations that she joined “a terrorist and outlawed group and disseminating false news that threaten to disturb public security and peace”, charges she denies.

El-Taweel, 23, is waiting for another hearing in order for her legal team to submit an appeal against the decision issued yesterday, her sister Alaa told the Anadolu Agency.

This as the eleventh time that Egyptian judicial bodies have renewed El-Taweel’s detention after her disappearance in June. El-Taweel suddenly disappeared in early June from the Maadi area, south of Cairo, for a period of 18 days before being spotted at the Qanater prison, north of Cairo.

On 24 October, the Egyptian Supreme State Security Prosecution detained her for 15 days because of the charges laid against her.

Her defence team have requested she be released on medical grounds as she suffers from a disability, but the prosecutor refused.
