Morsi's lawyer: Some of Sisi’s delegation may be arrested in London

Members of Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi’s delegration could be arrested during their official visit to the UK as they don’t have diplomatic immunity, lawyers for ousted president Mohamed Morsi said yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Egyptian Revolutionary Council in London, Morsi’s lawyer Rodney Dixon stressed that Al-Sisi’s visit should not be welcomed because of the human rights violations that have taken place in Egypt in the past two years.

He pointed out that some members of the delegation accompanying Al-Sisi during his visit do not have diplomatic immunity so they may be included in the police’s investigation.

He said that he is in touch with British police and judicial authorities regarding the investigation into the violations that took place in Egypt and the right to sue members of the delegation in line with UK laws.

Dr Maha Azzam, the head of the Egyptian Revolutionary Council, called for withdrawing the invitation that British Prime Minister David Cameron extended to Al-Sisi to visit Britain, noting that the visit constitutes a form of support for the Egyptian regime.

Last week academic and political figures and activists in the field of human rights sent a message to Cameron calling for him to withdraw the invitation made to the Egyptian president to visit the UK.

The British government extended the invitation to Al-Sisi last June, the decision was heavily criticised as it came only days after an Egyptian court had sentenced ousted president Morsi to death.
