Egypt postpones Mubarak’s trial over killing protesters in 2011

November 5, 2015 at 2:52 pm

Egypt’s Court of Cassation today adjourned the final trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak over the killing of protesters during the January 25 revolution to January 21 next year, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

The court ordered the next trial to be moved from the High Court building in the centre of Cairo to a “suitable location”. It nominated the Police Academy, which is heavily fortified.

Mubarak did not attend today’s hearing due to his “unsuitable health condition”, in spite of the fact that his attendance is “obligatory”.

In 2012, Reuters said, Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for conspiring to kill demonstrators in January 2011, sowing chaos and creating a security vacuum.

That sentence was challenged and a retrial was ordered. Last November, an Egyptian court dropped the charges against him.
