Abbas aide cancels lecture in Hebrew university after death threats

March 2, 2016 at 11:24 am

Israeli Hebrew University announced yesterday that it had cancelled a lecture due to be delivered by the former Palestinian Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash after he received death threats, Quds Press reported.

Al-Habbash, who is a senior aide to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, was scheduled to give the lecture yesterday but the Palestinian security services reported they received anonymous threats that he would be killed if he attended.

Meanwhile, Israel’s right-wing movement Im Tirtzu called on the Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett to cancel the lecture.

The group claimed that Al-Habbash incites terror and is therefore party to the killing of Israelis during the ongoing intifada.

Israel’s Ynet News website reported that the Harry S Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace announced an hour before the event that it had received notification from PA officials that Al-Habbash would not be attending the event following the threats that had been received against his life.

Al-Habbash was scheduled to take part in a public discussion with Yesh Atid Member of the Knesset Ofer Shelah.
