Palestinian teachers in the occupied West Bank are continuing a widespread strike against the Palestinian Authority government, following its failure to meet their demands.
Palestinian public school teachers commenced the strike on 10 February, demanding regular salary increases and promotions, among other provisions that have not been met since an agreement was signed between the PA and the Palestinian Teachers Union, following strikes in 2013.
The teachers expressed their rejection of “initiatives” reported by mass media over the last few days, describing them as “one-sided”. They also criticised the national unity government for ignoring their issues.
Speaking to Quds Press, many teachers accused the government of “trying to incite the public against them”.
According to one teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the ministry of education is calling for headmasters to report the names of teachers taking part in the action.
Security forces have attempted to clamp down on the striking teachers, with multiple checkpoints erected to prevent teachers from mobilizing en masse. Teachers also reported that security services have broken into a number of schools to obtain the names of those taking part in the strike.
