The Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee on Monday approved the so-called “suspension bill” that targets Arab lawmakers in the Israeli parliament.
The bill will be presented to the Knesset in the coming days. It could become law if it passes through the second and third readings.
The bill would make it possible to suspend the membership if any parliament member on the grounds that he fails to recognise Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and if he is seen to incite racism and hatred and support military struggle against Israel.
According to its terms, if 61 Knesset members request the suspension of a fellow member, the Israeli parliament’s general authority would hold a special session. The MK could only be suspended after at least 90 MKs vote for the request.
The suspension would come into effect 10 days after the decision’s approval. A suspended lawmaker may appeal the decision in court
