The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement — Hamas — has said that it has been doing its best to fulfil the electoral aspirations of the people in the upcoming local elections. According to spokesman Fawzi Barhoum. Hamas decided to participate in the elections because it believes that it is a “national duty that serves the interests of the Palestinian people” to do so.
“Maybe some people thought that we would have refused to allow the elections to take place in Gaza or to take part in them,” Barhoum explained, “but that was wrong and we started to prepare ourselves as soon as we took the decision to take part.”
He added that Hamas has been mobilising all of its senior officials, members and supporters in preparation for the polls. The Palestinians, he said, want to have “people serving them and facilitating their lives.”
The movement’s spokesman noted that Hamas is there with its members and the technocrats it will include on its own candidate lists or support on different lists.
