Jordan is suffering from a water crisis which is being made worse by the influx of Syrian and Iraqi refugees who are increasing demand on already limited supplies, details released yesterday to mark World Water Day revealed.

A senior official in Jordan’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation said: “We afforded about 70 litres for every person a day. After the refugee influx, the demand on water increased by 21 per cent across the kingdom and 40 per cent in the southern regions.”

Annual rainfall in Jordan is 200 millilitres.

In addition to rainwater, Jordan depends on external water resources based on deals signed with neighbouring countries.
