UAE: 284 years in prison for bank thieves who stole $172.8m

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court yesterday sentenced 28 defendants to 284 years in jail after finding them guilty of fraud.

A total of 33 people of US, Russian, Indian, Canadian and Pakistani nationalities were charged with forgery and seizure of 635 million dirhams ($172.8 million) from a bank operating in the UAE.

The court ordered the defendants to repay the remaining nine million dirhams ($2.5 million) outstanding after the remainder was seized.

Dependents were also ordered to pay compensation of 21,000 dirhams ($5,718) to the bank in addition to fees.

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court sentenced each of the eight main defendants to 15 years in prison and ten others to ten years in jail.

Nine others were convicted of transferring the funds in to their accounts and handed seven year jail terms. One defendant was given a one ye term and is to be deported upon its completion.

Five dependents were acquitted of any charges.
