More than 70 per cent of the residents of the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek have been displaced over the past few days, as a result of Israeli shelling and evacuation orders, according to the National News Agency.
The agency reported that the Israeli bombardment targeted the city and its surroundings, including areas near Baalbek Castle and other historical monuments. Hospitals, schools and other civilian institutions were also targeted, as well as tourist facilities.
On Sunday, the Israeli army issued new evacuation orders for the residents of Baalbek Governorate, warning that it would target the area due to the alleged “presence of interests affiliated with Hezbollah” there. The army attached maps to its warning showing the targeted buildings and called for their evacuation. Residents were told to stay at least 500 metres away from them.
Israel has intensified its attacks on various areas of Lebanon in recent weeks. The occupation state claims to be attacking Hezbollah, but many civilians are among its victims.
