An unidentified armed group has stolen the body of Watban Ibrahim Al-Hassan, the half-brother of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. His wife was kidnapped at the same time in a raid north of Baghdad.

Al-Hassan died in prison a few days ago and his wife is believed to have been taking the body to Tikrit for burial. A tribal elder has called for the body to be returned and the kidnap victim to be released unharmed.

The Iraqi authorities have not commented on the incident and no known group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

The Iraqi Ministry of Justice announced Al-Hassan’s death in a Baghdad prison on Thursday, after a long illness. He was born in 1952 and held several positions during Saddam’s rule, including that of interior minister. Following the dictator’s downfall, he was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging.
