More than 400,000 soldiers have been positioned across the country in preparation for events to mark the fifth anniversary of the January 25 Revolution, the Safa news agency reported yesterday.
“The deployment of this number of Egyptian soldiers is aimed to secure the vital facilities, roads and main areas during the celebrations of the revolution on Monday,” Egyptian media said.
The police and army set up security checkpoints and are organising patrols in main streets and areas.
Military police was deployed across the country and have been on alert for any emergency, according to local media.
In Alexandria, northern Egypt, combat brigades helped local police set up checkpoints and organise patrols to secure the main facilities, neighbourhoods and areas. The same measure was taken in the southern area of the country.
Stricter security measures were taken along the Suez Canal and around banks across all governorates.
A wide range of Egyptian parties have called on people to take to the streets to protest against Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, who took office after a military coup against the first freely elected President Mohamed Morsi.
