People in the Egyptian capital Cairo took to the streets on Friday to protest against what they said are “continuous police violations” as well as price hikes in the country, Anadolu has reported. Similar demonstrations took place in other cities across Egypt.
The protests took place while the funeral of Mohamed Adel Ismail was being held. The local driver was killed on Thursday by a policeman near Cairo Security Office. Mourners described the police as “gangs” in the way that they operate.
The Arab Spring:
5 years on
Take a look at the Arab Spring countries five years on.
This is the third consecutive week that Egyptians have taken to the streets to protest against price hikes. The National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy and against the Coup has been calling for such demonstrations of public discontent.
The protests started on the anniversary of the 25 January Revolution, with demonstrators calling for the government of Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to release all political prisoners. Calls were also made for the regime itself to be removed.
High prices of essential commodities are one of the most difficult problems for middle class Egyptians. Although the regime cannot ignore it, it is a problem for which it has no effective solution.
Since the 2013 military coup, hundreds of Egyptians have been killed, arrested or “forcefully disappeared” for taking part in public protests.
