Thousands of Palestinian public employees in the Gaza Strip held a strike yesterday over what they said was the Palestinian unity government’s failure to “shoulder its responsibilities towards them”.

The President of Syndicate of Public Employees in Gaza, Mohammed Siam, said the strike is a message to the Palestinians involved in the Doha dialogue not to exclude the public employee problem from their agenda.

“If we do not receive our salaries like the other employees, and if our problems are overlooked in the Qatar talks, then we will not allow the reconciliation to take place on our expense. We will not suffer alone, and we will work to take our rights with all means possible,” Siam told Quds Press.

He explained that the union has organised other events over the coming weeks including a massive march on Tuesday towards the cabinet’s headquarters in Gaza City.

The Palestinian unity government has refused to pay Gaza employees’ salaries since 2014.
