Hamas’s relations with the international community are driven by support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to resist occupation, a senior official said.

Hossam Badran told journalists on Wednesday all people are entitled to self-determination.

Hamas’s stance on the situation in Syria and other Arab countries is “based on the rule of non-interference in countries’ internal affairs,” he continued, stressing that the movement “has no role in the Syrian crisis, and its stance on the Syrian people’s right to determine its fate did not and will not change.”

His remarks come following comments by senior Hezbollah member, Hassan Hoballah, which equated Hamas’s stance on the Syrian conflict to that of Hezbollah.

Hoballah, who represents Hezbollah in the Lebanese parliament, said that his movement’s relations with Hamas are “historic and strong, and have not been cut”, adding that no problems exist between the two sides.

He also said that Hamas and Hezbollah share the common goal of “resisting Israeli occupation.”
