Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday called on the Israeli government to immediately freeze settlement construction as a prelude to the resumption of peace process.
“Our hands are stretched out to peace based on justice and truth, and we are against violence and extremism wherever it comes from,” Abbas said at a press conference with Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis after their meeting in Ramallah.

“The continuation of the current situation cannot be tolerated, and in order to achieve peace, security and good neighbourly relations, Israel must take crucial decisions and immediately freeze the settlements, stop settlers’ aggression and respect Palestinian authority over the Palestinian territories in accordance with the agreements.”
The Palestinian president welcomed the French initiative to hold an international peace conference and stressed the importance of the Arab ministerial committee’s work to discuss seeking a UN Security Council resolution on settlements.
Meanwhile, the Romanian president called to rebuild trust between the Palestinians and Israelis stressing that a solution for the conflict can be reached through negotiations only.
