Egypt’s Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has issued a presidential decree suggesting that 19 General Intelligence Service officials should retire “at their request,” according to the official Gazette, which published the decree on Thursday.
The document includes Major General Wael Mohammed Abd El-Ghani El-Safty. In September 2016, the Mekammeleen satellite TV channel, which is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood, broadcast a leaked audio recording of a telephone conversation between El-Safty, who was in charge of the Palestinian file within Egyptian intelligence, and Mohamed Dahlan, the former Fatah official. The conversation revealed Egyptian feelings towards the Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas.
El-Safty described Abbas as being “no longer able to… think or focus” and that he was only concerned about remaining in power. “Those whom Abbas could not contain now have stances that are closer to Hamas’s,” he added.
