Former Israeli PM requests prison pardon

February 4, 2017 at 7:35 am

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert requested President Reuven Rivlin issue him a pardon so he is released from jail early.

Olmert, who was jailed in February last year for 27 months on charges of corruption, made the request in the past few days.

Rivlin’s office confirmed that a pardon request had been received and that, as per the protocol, it would be sent to the Ministry of Justice for consideration.

Olmert was found guilty of receiving bribes from the developers of a luxury high-rise apartment complex in Jerusalem. He was also indicted on charges of accepting cash from a businessman and using the funds for personal expenses.

If he is not pardoned, he is due to be released in July and would not expect to carry out the remainer of his term.
