Revenues from taxes imposed on alcohol in Morocco increased $38.23 million in 2021.

A report issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance said the revenues amounted to $86.25 million compared to the government’s estimated income of $69.32 million.

The data reflects the significant increase in the consumption of alcohol and alcoholic beverages over the past year.

The rise in alcohol consumption comes despite a law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic drinks to Moroccan Muslims and which sets penalties for violators of up to six months in prison.

The ministry also reported a significant increase in import taxes on alcohol and soft drinks as well as tobacco in 2021.
